Cochin Shipyard GME Course

Cochin Shipyard GME Course

The Cochin Shipyard GME course is a 12-month, fully residential pre-sea programme for eligible engineering graduates who want to enter the engine department of the Merchant Navy. It is conducted by the Marine Engineering Training Institute (METI) of Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi and is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS).

For applicants, the real questions are practical: Is my engineering branch accepted? What is the current fee? Does METI conduct an entrance examination? Will the institute arrange a ship after the course? This guide answers those questions using the live METI admission instructions and official Cochin Shipyard information on METI available in September 2026.

Cochin Shipyard GME Overview

According to Cochin Shipyard’s official METI overview, METI began its Graduate Marine Engineering training in 1993. The institute operates under Cochin Shipyard Limited, a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The programme converts eligible mechanical, related mechanical-stream, naval architecture and certain non-DGS-approved marine engineering graduates into candidates trained for a sea-going marine engineering career.

A note about conflicting batch information

The current METI joining instructions state that there are two admissions per year, with training beginning on 1 January and 1 September and 160 seats in total. A separate Cochin Shipyard METI overview still says there is one January batch. Because the live METI application portal advertises the September 2026 intake and links to the newer joining instructions, this guide treats the live instructions as the operational source. Applicants should still check the portal before applying because dates and capacity can change.

METI Approval and Course Structure

Course Structure

Cochin Shipyard states that METI is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. The official METI joining instructions also say the course follows the DGS-approved syllabus under the STCW Convention, as amended.

How the 12-month training is delivered

  • Classroom instruction in marine engineering subjects
  • Laboratory work
  • Workshop practice
  • Afloat training and exposure to shipboard conditions
  • Periodic written and practical tests
  • Maintenance of a Training Manual and Work Diary
  • Five STCW modular courses arranged by METI during or after the main course

A trainee must obtain at least 50% in each subject to complete the course successfully. The official fee includes study material, laboratory and library access, the Training Manual, TAR book and the five STCW modular courses.

What the course does—and does not do

The course provides the approved pre-sea training needed for the GME route. It does not, by itself, guarantee a berth on a ship or immediate promotion to Fourth Engineer. Candidates still need sponsorship or onboard training, the required sea service, and the applicable DGS examination and certification steps.

Eligibility and Medical Standards

Academic eligibility

According to METI’s current joining instructions, an applicant must be an Indian national, hold an Indian passport and satisfy the following academic conditions:

  • A full-time B.E./B.Tech degree with at least 50% marks from a recognised university and an AICTE-approved institute, IIT or university engineering college.
  • Accepted categories include Mechanical Engineering; mechanical combination streams where “Mechanical” appears first; naval architecture combination streams where “Naval Architecture” appears first; and B.E./B.Tech Marine Engineering from a non-DGS-approved but AICTE/UGC-approved institution.
  • At least 50% in English in Class 10, Class 12, Diploma or Degree. A limited 5% relaxation is stated for eligible Scheduled Tribe candidates from Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, subject to the stated parental-origin conditions.
  • Maximum age of 28 years on the course commencement date, subject to any officially applicable exemption.

Important Part A distinction

The degree branch matters after admission. METI states that candidates in Category 1 (Mechanical Engineering) and Category 4 (eligible non-DGS-approved Marine Engineering) are eligible for Part A exemptions for MEO Class IV and Class II after successful completion of GME. Candidates from mechanical combination streams and naval architecture streams must pass the applicable Part A subjects under DGS rules. Do not assume every accepted degree receives the same exemption.

Medical fitness standards

Applicants must produce a medical fitness certificate from a DGS-approved medical practitioner in the prescribed format. METI currently asks for the certificate to remain valid for at least 18 months from the start of the course. The doctor should upload it to the candidate’s DG Shipping seaman profile after the INDoS number is issued.

  • Minimum height: 157 cm, with correlated weight and proportionate chest
  • No disqualifying eyesight abnormality under the applicable seafarer medical rules
  • No colour blindness
  • Good hearing
  • Psychological screening or MMPE test when required

Use the official DG Shipping website to open the Maritime Health section, locate approved medical examiners and confirm the latest rules. Do not rely on a normal clinic certificate.

Is there a METI entrance exam?

The current official METI joining instructions do not describe a separate written entrance examination, interview pattern or published syllabus. They state that applications are submitted online and selected candidates are informed by email. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to promise a particular METI test pattern. If the current batch notice or selection email introduces an assessment, follow that communication.

Apply only through the official METI GME application portal. If you need admission-related contact details, use Cochin Shipyard’s official contact page; the portal currently lists meti.admnoff@cochinshipyard.in for admission assistance.

The residential rules are strict: uniform is compulsory, alcohol, tobacco and drugs are prohibited, overnight absence is not allowed, and personal motor vehicles are not permitted inside the campus or hostel. Candidates should read the joining instructions before accepting admission—not after arriving.

Placement and Career Opportunities

Placement and Career Opportunities

Sponsorship is the key issue

METI defines sponsorship as a guarantee letter from a shipping company or RPSL-licensed manning agency for the required six months of onboard training after the 12-month course. A candidate may submit the letter at admission or within six months of joining the GME programme.

METI may facilitate sponsorship depending on arrangements with shipping companies, but the official METI joining instructions clearly state that CSL/METI is not responsible for guaranteeing onboard training if the candidate fails to obtain sponsorship. This is placement support, not assured placement.

CSL-METI has developed strong industry connections with several established shipping and ship-management companies over the years. Apart from its own placement assistance and industry interaction initiatives, the institute also receives candidates who have been selected and sponsored by shipping companies for completing their pre-sea GME training at METI through company–institute arrangements.

In recent batches, candidates undergoing training at CSL-METI have been associated with companies such as Synergy Marine Group, Maersk, ASP Ships Group, Berge Bulk, Columbia Shipmanagement, Marlow Navigation, Unix Line, V.Ships India, d’Amico Ship Ishima/Sirius Ship Management and other reputed maritime organisations. Some candidates have also entered through structured industry programmes such as the IMEC India Cadet Programme, where participating companies select and sponsor candidates before allocating them to partner maritime training institutes, including METI.

However, applicants should understand that these company associations do not mean that every candidate joining CSL-METI receives automatic sponsorship or guaranteed placement from a particular company. Sponsorship opportunities, participating companies, intake numbers and institute allocation depend on individual company requirements and batch-wise arrangements. Candidates should always verify the sponsorship terms, company association and assigned training institute from the official communication received from the sponsoring company before making any payment or commitment.

Career path after training

Complete GME. Finish the 12-month METI course and required modular training.

Join a vessel. Sail under valid company sponsorship for the required onboard training.

Complete sea service. Finish the applicable records, assessments and sea-time requirements.

Meet DGS requirements. Complete the current requirements for the MEO Class IV Certificate of Competency.

Progress by competence. Further ranks require additional sea service, examinations, certificates and company promotion.

Career progression depends on obtaining a berth, completing sea time, clearing competency requirements and earning company promotion. Course admission alone should never be treated as proof of employment.

How SMVDM Academy Can Support Your GME Journey

Getting eligible for METI is only the first filter. Candidates also need strong mechanical fundamentals, aptitude, communication and interview readiness for institute or shipping-company selection processes. SMVDM Academy’s GME sponsorship preparation offers structured classroom training, mock tests, interview practice and personal feedback. Use that support to prepare properly, but remember that coaching cannot override METI eligibility or guarantee sponsorship.
