HIMT GME Course
The HIMT GME course is a one-year pre-sea programme for eligible engineering graduates who want to enter the engine department of the Merchant Navy. A prospective applicant normally wants clear answers to four questions: Am I eligible? What will I pay? How does selection work? Does admission include sponsorship or a shipboard job?
This guide answers those questions using the latest publicly available information checked on 3 September 2026. Fees, intake dates and sponsorship drives can change. The safest approach is to verify the live HIMT course page and written offer before paying any amount.

Who Is Eligible for the HIMT GME Course?
HIMT publishes separate academic routes for Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture graduates. Meeting the baseline does not automatically guarantee admission, and a shipping company may apply stricter standards during a sponsorship drive.
Academic eligibility published by HIMT
- Mechanical route: BE or B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, or an accepted specialised stream in which “Mechanical” appears first and is the core discipline, such as Mechanical and Automation, Mechanical and Electronics, or Mechanical and Automobile.
- Naval Architecture route: BE or B.Tech in Naval Architecture, or an accepted specialised stream in which “Naval Architecture” appears first, such as Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering or Naval Architecture and Ship Building.
- At least 50% marks in the final year of the degree programme.
- At least 50% in English in Class 10, Class 12 or the degree examination.
- Class 10 and Class 12 must be completed through a recognised board, and the degree must be government- or AICTE-recognised.
- HIMT publishes a limited 5% relaxation in English for qualifying Scheduled Tribe candidates native to Lakshadweep or the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, subject to the stated parental-birth conditions.
Age and medical fitness
- Standard HIMT route: maximum 25 years of age at course commencement.
- Unaided eyesight: minimum 6/12, according to the HIMT page.
- No colour blindness; HIMT says colour vision is tested using the Ishihara chart.
- The candidate must meet the applicable Merchant Shipping medical requirements, including eyesight and hearing, and submit fitness certification from an approved maritime medical examiner.
Important: Do not rely on a general hospital certificate. Use the current approved doctor route indicated by the maritime regulator or the institute. Medical fitness is an official safety requirement; a private coaching institute cannot waive it.
-Standard eligibility versus sponsorship eligibility
Route | Baseline or published filter | What it means |
|---|---|---|
Standard HIMT GME | Up to 25 years; 50% final-year degree marks; 50% English | Institute admission baseline published on the normal course page. |
IMEC drive shown for 2026 | Up to 23 years, stronger school and degree performance, BMI below 23 and other conditions | Company/member-company screening. |
BSM drive shown for Sept 2026 | Up to 25 years on the stated cut-off date; above 60% degree aggregate plus higher school-level filters | A separate recruitment drive. |
This distinction matters. A candidate may be eligible to study GME but not meet a particular company’s sponsorship shortlist. Conversely, passing HIMT’s admission test does not mean a shipping company has selected the candidate.
HIMT GME Fees and What They Include
The standard HIMT GME page displayed the following amounts when checked on 3 September 2026:
- Application fee: ₹999. HIMT states that this is non-refundable.
- Total fee: ₹4,51,000.
- Refundable caution deposit: ₹20,000, after permitted adjustments for items such as laundry, damage or breakage.
- Published inclusions: course fee, accommodation, food, workshops, laboratory, library and uniform.
- Female-candidate discount shown by HIMT: ₹25,000 on the course fee.
Fee warning: Do not copy the fee from an old brochure or assume every sponsored route costs the same. For example, the Wallem page displayed ₹4,21,000, while the standard and BSM pages displayed ₹4,51,000. Ask for a dated written fee sheet showing taxes, deposits, included items, payment schedule and refund terms.
HIMT’s published withdrawal policy states a ₹10,000 cancellation fee when withdrawal is more than 15 days before commencement and no refund within 14 days of commencement or after commencement. Read the current policy before payment because route-specific terms may differ.

What Is the HIMT GME Selection Process?
For the standard course, the published sequence is registration, application-fee payment, online written examination, online interview and admission formalities. HIMT also states that it may reassess a candidate at any stage and may reject or waitlist a shortlisted candidate if reassessment performance is unsatisfactory.
A sponsored recruitment drive is different. HIMT may first screen the candidate, after which the shipping company or IMEC member company can conduct its own written test, interview, medical checks and final selection. The company’s decision controls sponsorship; institute admission alone does not replace company selection.
Does HIMT Provide GME Sponsorship?
HIMT advertises and facilitates company-linked GME recruitment or pre-course sponsorship opportunities. Examples found on its official site include IMEC member-company, BSM and Wallem routes. However, sponsorship is not automatic for every student and should not be described as a universal guarantee.
- Apply only when a live drive is officially open and you meet that drive’s separate criteria.
- Confirm whether the document offered is a sponsorship letter, a
- conditional offer, a placement letter or only eligibility to attend company selection.
- Check conditions covering medical fitness, academic documents, course completion, conduct, company vacancies and joining timelines.
- Never pay an unauthorised agent for a promised ship placement. Use the institute and company’s official channels.
The IMEC page used the phrase “guaranteed pre-course placement,” but the same page described written tests, interviews and selection by member companies. The accurate interpretation is that selected candidates receive company-linked sponsorship; applicants are not guaranteed selection merely because they apply.
Placement Assistance: What Applicants Should Verify
HIMT shows placement supporters and company-specific drives, but an applicant should ask for evidence that matches the exact batch and route. Placement assistance means help with opportunities and selection; it is not the same as an unconditional onboard job guarantee.
- Which companies interviewed the most recent GME batch?
- How many enrolled students were eligible for placement, selected and actually joined ships?
- What was the median waiting time from course completion to first joining?
- Were selections pre-course or post-course, and were they conditional?
- What happens if the sponsoring company delays or withdraws joining?
How SMVDM Academy Can Support Your GME Journey
SMVDM Academy can support applicants with focused GME sponsorship preparation, including concept revision, aptitude and written-test practice, interview preparation and guidance on the selection process. Coaching cannot change DG Shipping medical rules or guarantee company selection, but structured preparation can help an eligible candidate perform better and avoid preventable application mistakes. Review our GME PREPARATION COURSE and choose support based on your actual weak areas rather than relying on a promise of placement.
Use Merchant Navy Decoded for Informed Career Decisions
Merchant Navy Decoded can remain part of the journey beyond one admission test. Its career guidance, college information, learning resources and seafarer-focused content can help candidates understand the GME route, compare institutes and companies, prepare for sponsorship, and build practical knowledge for shipboard training. Explore the Merchant Navy Decoded platform and verify time-sensitive admission details against the institute or regulator before acting.
You can also access these resources through the Merchant Navy Decoded App, which brings maritime learning, career guidance, company insights, and useful seafarer resources together in one place. Download the app on Android or iOS to continue learning throughout your Merchant Navy journey
Conclusion
The HIMT GME course is a one-year route for eligible Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture graduates, but eligibility, admission and sponsorship are three separate gates. Check your degree, English marks, age and medical fitness first; then verify the live fee and refund terms. If sponsorship matters, apply only to an active company drive and read the conditions before payment. Use SMVD Academy for targeted selection preparation and Merchant Navy Decoded for wider career guidance, while treating official institute and regulatory requirements as final.
