SCI GME Course Overview
The scheme is offered through SCILAL’s Maritime Training Institute at Powai, Mumbai, with shipboard training on SCI vessels. Its published structure is eight months ashore plus ten months onboard, shown as 4+6 months.

Eligibility and Medical Requirements
Academic and age checklist
The published admission criteria include:
- Degree: Mechanical Engineering, specified Mechanical-related streams, Naval Architecture streams, or non-DGS-approved Marine Engineering.
- Institution: an eligible recognised/approved institution under the notification.
- Engineering marks: at least 50% in the final year.
- English: at least 50% at Class 10, Class 12 or degree level.
- Age at commencement: maximum 28; SC/ST relaxation five years; OBC-NCL three years; women an additional two years.
- Nationality: Indian; a valid passport is required at the interview.
- Documents: degree/provisional certificate and relevant mark sheets available for verification.
The English relaxation is five percentage points for qualifying Scheduled Tribe candidates from Lakshadweep or Andaman and Nicobar Islands, subject to the stated birthplace, parental and community conditions.
Degree-title exceptions need attention
Do not assume every engineering branch qualifies. Mechanical-related and Naval Architecture combinations carry wording conditions about the core discipline. MTI’s Mechanical-stream examples and its “Mechanical first” wording are not completely consistent. Send your exact degree title and transcript to MTI if your branch is borderline, particularly Mechatronics.
The regulator’s circular register also lists a July 2026 draft concerning GME eligibility. A draft should not be treated as an operative admission rule. Confirm your intended batch rather than assuming a proposed change already applies.
Medical fitness
SCI requires assessment by a DGS-approved doctor, including eyesight and other prescribed checks. Ask MTI which examiner and medical instructions apply to your selection.
Prepare for the appointment sensibly:
- Carry your identification, spectacles prescription and relevant medical records.
- Disclose previous surgery, continuing treatment and regular medication.
- Ask the examiner about any condition that could affect sea service.
- Follow the clinic’s instructions about investigations and preparation.
Do not decide your eligibility from a social-media eyesight chart. A fitness decision concerns your individual condition and duties. The IMO’s STCW framework covers seafarer training, certification and medical fitness standards; national implementation and the required examination still matter.

MTI’s notification page records GME interviews on 2–3 September 2026. Those dates have passed as of this article’s verification date. Use MTI’s official notifications to check subsequent announcements; do not reuse an old batch’s schedule.

The two-hour MCQ examination covers professional knowledge, English, quantitative aptitude and reasoning. Each section must be qualified. Online testing requires attendance at the designated centre.

- English: practise comprehension and explain technical ideas in short, clear sentences.

For example, when revising a centrifugal pump, explain its purpose, main parts, operating principle and the reason for priming where applicable. Then practise a simple numerical problem. This tests understanding more effectively than memorising a definition alone.
Keep an error log with three columns: topic, mistake and corrected method. Revisit that log before starting another mock test. Repeating tests without reviewing mistakes is a weak preparation strategy.
Interview readiness

- Why do you want to move from your engineering discipline into marine engineering?
- What did you personally contribute to your graduation project?
- Can you explain an engineering principle with a practical example?
- What do you understand about working away from home and following shipboard discipline?

Training and Certification Requirements
Understand what each milestone means
STCW establishes international minimum standards, while the administration implements training and certification requirements. Its engine-department provisions are distinct from course admission policies.
Use the following questions to understand your own certification route:
- What training records and assessments must I complete?
- Which safety and other mandatory courses apply?
- What evidence of approved sea service will I need?
- Which MEO Class IV subjects or exemptions apply to my exact degree?
- What must be completed before my examination application is accepted?
MEO means Marine Engineer Officer; CoC means Certificate of Competency. Consult the regulator’s engineering TEAP manual resources alongside current examination instructions. TEAP covers training, examination and assessment procedures.
Do not assume all GME graduates receive identical Part A exemptions. Ask MTI or the relevant Mercantile Marine Department to confirm your degree-specific examination requirements in writing.
Make training useful
During practical training, keep a clear record of what you observed and what you actually performed under supervision. For each machine, aim to understand its purpose, operating limits, common faults and safety precautions. Never record a task as completed merely because you watched someone else do it.
Before signing off, check your records with the responsible training officer. Resolving an incomplete entry while you are still onboard is more practical than trying to reconstruct it later.

- Expected ship allocation and any waiting period.

- How service days are counted.
- What happens if training is interrupted.
- The conditions for employment after certification.
A service obligation is not, by itself, proof that a future job is guaranteed.
Plan beyond the first ship
The intended progression is towards MEO Class IV certification and later higher responsibility through further qualifying experience and certification. Keep your first goal practical: complete approved training properly and establish your examination eligibility.
Avoid a guaranteed “time to officer” calculation. Separate planned training from possible waiting, assessment preparation and employment decisions. Ask for evidence when someone promises an unusually fast joining or promotion timeline.
