The SIMS GME course is a one-year residential programme for mechanical engineering graduates who want to work in a ship’s engine department. It is conducted at the Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies (SIMS) campus in Lonavala. SIMS is associated with Executive Ship Management (ESM), Singapore.

SIMS GME Course Overview

Eligibility and Medical Standards
Academic eligibility
Before applying, check every condition below. Meeting only the degree requirement is not enough.
- Hold a BE/B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering; or a full-time mechanical stream in which “Mechanical” appears first and remains the core subject, such as Mechanical and Automation or Mechanical and Electronics; or a five-year integrated ME/M.Tech degree.
- The degree must be from an AICTE/UGC-approved college or institute, or an IIT/NIT, as stated in the prospectus.
- Score at least 55% in the final year.
- Complete the BE/B.Tech in four years.
- Have no more than six ATKT/arrear/repeat/fail attempts across the degree programme.
- Score at least 50% in English in Class X or Class XII.
If your degree has a specialised or combined title, do not guess your eligibility. Email SIMS your exact degree name and mark sheets, and ask for written confirmation before paying the non-refundable test fee.
Age, marital status and documents
- Maximum age for BE/B.Tech applicants: 25 years on the course commencement date.
- Maximum age for an integrated ME/M.Tech applicant: 26 years on the course commencement date.
- Marital status: unmarried, under the published SIMS criteria.
- Passport: a valid passport must be held before joining.
- Original documents: all required mark sheets and certificates must be submitted before the course begins; admission can be cancelled if they are not produced.
- Name consistency: the candidate’s full name should match across academic documents, Aadhaar and passport.

Medical and eyesight standards
- The candidate must be physically fit under the applicable DG Shipping medical standards.
- No colour blindness is permitted.
- The prospectus permits corrective lenses, but gives entry-level distant unaided vision limits of 6/12 in each eye, or 6/9 in the better eye and 6/18 in the other eye.
- Minimum height: 157 cm for male candidates and 152 cm for female candidates.
- Minimum weight: 48 kg for male candidates and 45 kg for female candidates.
- Published BMI range: 19 to 27.
- The final medical must be completed through a DG Shipping-approved doctor who is also approved by SIMS.
If you already know about an eyesight, BMI or other medical concern, get it checked early. A preliminary opinion from an approved doctor can save you from spending on applications, travel or coaching unnecessarily. The final admission medical, however, is the one that decides fitness.
Application Process and Important Steps
- Check the latest SIMS prospectus and confirm that your exact degree, age, marks, attempts, English score and medical profile meet the published criteria.
- Complete the online application on the official SIMS website. Do not apply through an outside agent.
- Pay the published online test fee. The Rev 01/2026 prospectus lists ₹1,100; verify the amount on the live portal before payment.
- Send scanned academic documents for verification when instructed by the admissions team.
- Attend the online test using the required secure browser and video-conferencing setup communicated by SIMS.
- If shortlisted, complete the faculty interview and 16 PF psychometric test.
- Complete the medical examination through a DG Shipping- and company-approved doctor.
- Pay the joining fee and submit original documents within the institute’s deadline.

The published test has a 10-minute demo paper, followed by 60 minutes of multiple-choice questions and 20 minutes of English writing. Check the instructions sent for your batch because the online setup may change.
What the interview assesses
Candidates who clear the online test face an interview with SIMS marine faculty. According to the prospectus, the panel looks at your academics, aptitude, attitude and family background. A 16 PF psychometric test follows the interview.
- Revise core mechanical subjects instead of memorising isolated interview answers.
- Be ready to explain final-year work, internships, academic gaps and backlogs honestly.
- Understand why you want an engine-room career, including the work conditions and responsibility involved.
- Practise short, structured English answers and technical explanations.

What the published fee includes—and excludes
- The prospectus describes course fees as covering tuition, hostel, mess, uniform, books, laptop and five basic STCW courses, along with the listed INDOS and caution-deposit components.
- A ₹15,000 cost for DG/value-added courses after the one-year training is listed separately.
- Personal laundry, telephone, medical, passport, US visa and visa-related travel are listed as candidate-borne costs.
- The ₹15,000 caution deposit is refundable under the stated rules after adjustment for damage or breakage.
- The ₹50,000 booking/joining fee is described as non-refundable if the candidate withdraws before the course starts. The prospectus separately notes a limited refund where the candidate cannot meet eligibility conditions.
- Waivers and any applicable tax treatment are subject to the current institute terms and government rules.

Sponsorship, Placement and Joining
Does SIMS provide sponsorship?
SIMS is linked to Executive Ship Management. Its 2026 prospectus says cadets receive “100% in-house placement” with the parent company after completing the course. That company link is useful, but applicants still need to understand the conditions attached to the offer.
A placement statement does not automatically promise a particular ship, joining date, salary or permanent job. Joining can depend on course completion, medical fitness, document readiness, vessel availability and company requirements. Ask SIMS for the placement and sea-time terms that apply to your admission offer.
Career pathway after the course
- Complete the one-year SIMS GME programme and obtain the required training documentation.
- Complete the required onboard sea service and training-record requirements under the applicable DG Shipping pathway.
- Complete the prescribed post-sea courses, assessments and MEO Class IV examinations.
- Obtain the relevant Certificate of Competency before serving in the watchkeeping rank permitted by that CoC.
